Year
One Progress Report
Developed
during academic year 2002-03, the Davis campus Strategic Plan
was adopted in September 2003. It has been a full 12 months
since the Plan began serving as a guiding document for planning,
actions, and decisions throughout the campus. During this
first year, deans, vice chancellors, and vice provosts have
worked with faculty and staff in their respective units to
advance the Plan’s goals of learning, discovery, and
engagement, and to build the “framework for success”
that underlies those goals. Progress in key-areas has been
jump started by the allocation of one-time funds from the
Office of the Provost to supplement and complement investments
at the unit level.
A critically important
part of the Strategic Plan involves assessing progress on
a regular and ongoing basis. Each of the Plan’s 14 strategies
has a team of point people, usually a vice-chancellor or vice
provost and a dean, which has taken responsibility for coordinating
action on that strategy and for monitoring progress.
This “Year
One” progress report consists of the individual reports
of these point teams. The reports are designed to be succinct
and easy-to-read. The format is the same for all – a
brief narrative summary of first year implementation efforts;
a bullet-form description of advances and ongoing programs
consistent with the strategy; and a bullet-form short statement
of plans for 2004-05. Also included in most cases is a brief
evaluation of the indicators of achievement or metrics that
are associated with the strategy. In some instances the point
team has proposed additional metrics to measure progress in
advancing the strategy.
You are invited
to explore these brief reports to see what has been happening
and what is planned for the coming year. We have also highlighted
two areas -- recruitment of high achieving students and building
research infrastructure to assist in securing major, interdisciplinary
research grants -- for special focus. You can find links to
information about them on this page. Over the coming year
we plan to add others – check back often to see what
is new. If there is a specific area you would like to see
highlighted, please let us know.
As you review these
reports, it will be clear that we have made excellent progress
in a short period of time. But much more remains to be done.
Each of you is invited to become actively involved in the
Plan. Your thoughts, suggestions, and recommendations are
always welcome. You may address them to the point people for
a particular strategy or by e-mail to strategicplan@ucdavis.edu.
All input will be acknowledged and thoughtfully considered.
